Rising damp treatment and DPC injection.

Rising damp is diagnosed far more often than it occurs, so it is confirmed on site with moisture readings before anything is quoted. Where it is the cause, a new damp proof course goes in, the contaminated plaster comes off and the wall is replastered by the same team.

WHAT IT IS

Rising damp treatment & DPC

Groundwater rising through masonry by capillary action, where the damp proof course has failed or was never fitted. We inject a silicone-based DPC at mortar-course level, take contaminated plaster back to the brick, and replaster in a salt-resistant render system so the hygroscopic salts left in the wall cannot bloom through the new finish.

MECHANISM 01

Rising damp

Groundwater drawn upward through masonry by capillary action, where the damp proof course has failed or was never installed.

SIGNATURE

A tide mark up to roughly a metre, salt bloom on the plaster, worst at skirting level, present year round.

SIGNS

What to look for on your own wall.

  • A tide mark or staining rising from the skirting
  • White salt bloom on plaster or brickwork
  • Paint or wallpaper lifting at the bottom of a wall
  • Skirting boards or floorboards soft to a screwdriver

Points towards groundwater rising through masonry where the damp proof course has failed or was never fitted. This is also the mechanism diagnosed in error more often than any other, which is why it is confirmed on site with moisture readings before anything is quoted.

Reading one for another is why damp comes back after it has been "fixed". The survey comes first, and it decides everything after it.

METHOD

One corner, four stages.

Damp staining and salt bloom at the base of a plastered wall.
01 · DAMP IDENTIFIEDStaining and salting at the base of the wall, worst in the corner where two external walls meet.
The same wall stripped back to bare brickwork.
02 · STRIPPED TO BRICKContaminated plaster comes off entirely: it holds the salts that pull moisture back through any new finish.
Membrane board fixed across the treated brickwork.
03 · TREATED AND BOARDEDA new damp proof course is injected, then a membrane board is fixed to isolate the new surface from the masonry.
The finished wall, skimmed flat and drying out.
04 · REPLASTEREDSkimmed flat and left to dry through before decoration. Same team from the first survey to the last coat.

DAMP IN LIVING ROOM

Nigel did two jobs for me. Damp proof course in living room and insulation and plaster boards in bedroom. I am more than happy with the outcome. Nigel's work is meticulous, he is knowledgeable and trustworthy and I would highly recommend. The 30 year guarantee is also reassuring .

QUESTIONS

Asked about this every week.

Do I definitely have rising damp?

Probably not. Rising damp is diagnosed far more often than it occurs. Condensation and penetrating damp account for a large share of what gets treated as rising damp, and both are repaired differently. That is the whole reason we survey before quoting.

How long does the work take?

Most single-room damp proofing and replastering jobs are two to four days on site. The drying afterwards takes longer than the work itself, and we will tell you how long to allow for your walls.

Can I decorate straight away?

No. Fresh render holds a lot of water and needs to dry through before it will take paint. Emulsion applied too early seals the moisture in and then flakes off, which is the most common reason people think a repair has failed.

Is the work guaranteed?

All damp work is guaranteed for 30 years, and an insurance-backed option is available. We carry £1 million public liability insurance.

CONTACT

Send a photo of the wall.

Quickest route is WhatsApp with a photograph of the affected wall and, if you can, one of the outside face of the same wall. That is often enough for an initial view before a survey is booked.
