Penetrating damp, traced and repaired.

Patches that darken after rain and dry back between are water crossing the wall from outside. A damp proof course does nothing for it. The route is traced, the defect on the outside face is repaired, and the plaster goes back once the wall has dried.

WHAT IT IS

Penetrating damp

Water crossing the wall from outside. We trace the route: perished pointing, cracked render, a bridged cavity, blocked gutters, external ground levels sitting above the DPC. Then we repair the defect and make good internally once the wall has dried. Treatment without the repair will not hold.

MECHANISM 02

Penetrating damp

Water crossing the wall laterally through a defect in the fabric: pointing, render, gutters, a bridged cavity, raised ground levels.

SIGNATURE

Patches that darken after rain and dry back between, often high on the wall or alongside a downpipe.

SIGNS

What to look for on your own wall.

  • Patches that darken after heavy rain, then dry back
  • Cold, damp-feeling walls on one elevation only

Both of these track the weather. If a patch appears after rain and fades in a dry week, that is the pattern.

Points towards water crossing the wall from outside: pointing, render, ground levels, a blocked gutter or a bridged cavity. The repair starts on the outside face, and plaster goes back only once the wall has dried.

Reading one for another is why damp comes back after it has been "fixed". The survey comes first, and it decides everything after it.

QUESTIONS

Asked about this every week.

Will a dehumidifier fix it?

It will manage condensation while it is running. It does nothing about water entering through masonry, and it will not dry a wall that is being resupplied with moisture from the ground or from outside.

How long does the work take?

Most single-room damp proofing and replastering jobs are two to four days on site. The drying afterwards takes longer than the work itself, and we will tell you how long to allow for your walls.

Is the work guaranteed?

All damp work is guaranteed for 30 years, and an insurance-backed option is available. We carry £1 million public liability insurance.

Do you charge for a quote?

Quotes are free. We look at the property, establish the mechanism, and price the repair before anything is booked in.

RELATED

Damp is often more than one thing at once, and the mechanism decides the repair.

CONTACT

Send a photo of the wall.

Quickest route is WhatsApp with a photograph of the affected wall and, if you can, one of the outside face of the same wall. That is often enough for an initial view before a survey is booked.
