Condensation and black mould.

Black spot mould in corners, behind furniture and on window reveals is usually condensation: moisture made inside the house meeting a surface cold enough to condense on. It is a ventilation problem, not a masonry one, and no damp proof course will fix it.

WHAT IT IS

Condensation & ventilation

Moisture generated inside the building condensing on cold surfaces. We assess where the humid air comes from and where it currently goes, then specify extraction, background ventilation or insulation. No chemical damp treatment is appropriate for condensation, and we will say so if that is what you have.

MECHANISM 03

Condensation

Moisture produced inside the building meeting a surface cold enough for it to condense on. A ventilation problem, not a masonry one.

SIGNATURE

Black spot mould in corners, behind furniture and on window reveals. Markedly worse through winter.

SIGNS

What to look for on your own wall.

  • Black spot mould in corners and on window reveals
  • Condensation running down the inside of windows
  • Staining or mould behind furniture and in wardrobes

Points towards moisture generated inside the building condensing on cold surfaces. That is a ventilation and heating problem. No damp proof course will fix it, and a chemical treatment specified for it is money spent on the wrong wall.

Reading one for another is why damp comes back after it has been "fixed". The survey comes first, and it decides everything after it.

QUESTIONS

Asked about this every week.

Will a dehumidifier fix it?

It will manage condensation while it is running. It does nothing about water entering through masonry, and it will not dry a wall that is being resupplied with moisture from the ground or from outside.

Do I definitely have rising damp?

Probably not. Rising damp is diagnosed far more often than it occurs. Condensation and penetrating damp account for a large share of what gets treated as rising damp, and both are repaired differently. That is the whole reason we survey before quoting.

Do you charge for a quote?

Quotes are free. We look at the property, establish the mechanism, and price the repair before anything is booked in.

RELATED

Damp is often more than one thing at once, and the mechanism decides the repair.

CONTACT

Send a photo of the wall.

Quickest route is WhatsApp with a photograph of the affected wall and, if you can, one of the outside face of the same wall. That is often enough for an initial view before a survey is booked.
